Why antimalarials matter
Malaria—an infection caused by Plasmodium parasites transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes—is potentially life‑threatening if untreated. It is found in over 100 countries across Africa, Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East, and some Pacific islands.
Pre‑travel risk assessment
Our travel-health pharmacists:
- Assess the malaria risk specific to your destination
- Consider your itinerary, personal health, and preferences
- Recommend appropriate antimalarial options, including side effects and how to take them
- UK guidelines recommend starting antimalarials 1–2 weeks before travel and continuing for up to 4 weeks after return, depending on the medication.
Medication options we may recommend:
- Atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone® or generic) – daily; well tolerated; short post-travel course
- Taking 1 to 2 days before travel and continue for 7 days after return.
- Doxycycline – daily; may cause light sensitivity and gastrointestinal effects
- Mefloquine (Lariam®) – weekly; suitable for long stays but may affect mood/sleep
- We also advise on non-drug measures like DEET insect repellent, protective clothing, and mosquito nets—following the NHS “ABCD” approach (Awareness, Bite prevention, Chemoprophylaxis, Diagnosis).
