About Shingles Treatment
Shingles is a painful viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate later in life as shingles. It typically appears as a painful rash or fluid-filled blisters, usually affecting one side of the body or face, and is often preceded by burning, tingling, or itching sensations.
This NHS Pharmacy First service is available for eligible adults aged 18 years and over who meet the NHS criteria. Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms and confirm whether you are eligible before recommending or supplying treatment.
Common Symptoms of Shingles
- Painful rash, usually on one side of the body or face
- Fluid-filled blisters that may burst and form a crust
- Burning, tingling, or itching before the rash appears
- Sensitivity or pain in the affected area
- Feeling generally unwell or tired
- Headache or a mild fever
Symptoms can develop quickly, and pain may begin before the rash becomes visible. Early recognition and treatment are important because antiviral medicines work best when started within 72 hours (3 days) of the rash appearing.
What Causes Shingles?
Shingles occurs when the varicella-zoster virus, which remains dormant in the body after a previous chickenpox infection, becomes active again. Although the exact cause is not always known, several factors can increase the risk of reactivation.
- Older age (the risk increases with age)
- A weakened immune system
- Stress or physical fatigue
- Certain illnesses or medical conditions
- Medicines that affect the immune system
In some cases, the virus can reactivate without an obvious trigger.

Shingles Relief Advice
Shingles can be uncomfortable and sometimes quite painful, but there are a few simple things you can do at home to help ease your symptoms while your treatment starts working.
To help you feel more comfortable:
- Keep the rash clean and dry.
- Wear loose, soft clothing to avoid irritating the affected area.
- Apply a cool, damp cloth to the rash to help soothe pain and itching.
- Take pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen if it is suitable for you.
- Get plenty of rest and allow your body time to recover.
- Avoid scratching the rash, as this can slow healing and increase the risk of infection.
Things that may also help:
- Calamine lotion may help relieve itching for some people.
- Stay well hydrated and eat a balanced diet to support recovery.
- Allow yourself time to rest, as fatigue is common with shingles.
Important
Antiviral treatment works best when started early, ideally within 72 hours of the rash appearing. If the rash affects your face or eyes, your pain becomes severe, or you feel very unwell, seek urgent medical advice as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Shingles is a painful rash caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus.
You cannot catch shingles, but it can spread chickenpox to those who haven’t had it.
It usually lasts a few weeks, but early treatment can reduce severity.
Shingles is typically treated with antiviral medicines, which help reduce the severity and duration of the infection, especially when started as early as possible. Antiviral treatment is most effective when taken within 72 hours of the rash appearing, so prompt assessment is important.
In addition to antiviral medication, pain relief treatments such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may be recommended to help manage discomfort. Self-care advice, including keeping the affected area clean, avoiding irritation, and managing symptoms at home, may also help support recovery.
Our pharmacist will assess your symptoms and determine the most appropriate treatment for your condition. If necessary, you may be referred for further medical assessment, particularly if the rash affects the face or eyes, or if there is a risk of complications.
You should see a pharmacist as soon as you notice a painful, burning rash, ideally within 72 hours for the best treatment effect.

Yes, although it is uncommon, shingles can recur in some people, especially if the immune system is weakened.
Yes, shingles can sometimes affect the face, scalp, or areas around the eyes. This can be more serious because the infection may lead to complications affecting vision if not treated promptly. Symptoms may include a rash on the forehead, eyelid, nose, or around the eye, along with redness, swelling, pain, or sensitivity to light.
If you develop shingles symptoms on your face or near your eyes, it is important to seek medical advice as soon as possible. Early assessment and treatment can help reduce the risk of complications and support a quicker recovery. Our pharmacist can assess your symptoms and advise on the most appropriate next steps, including referral for urgent medical care if needed.
