About the Rabies Vaccine

Rabies is a serious viral infection that affects the brain and nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. The virus is spread through the saliva of infected animals, usually through bites, scratches, or contact with broken skin.

While rabies is extremely rare in the UK, it remains a risk in many parts of Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and some other regions. Travellers may be at increased risk when spending time outdoors, visiting remote areas, working with animals, or travelling where access to prompt medical care may be limited.

The Rabies vaccine helps protect against infection before travel and is commonly recommended for higher-risk travellers, including backpackers, long-term travellers, cyclists, hikers, volunteers, and those likely to come into contact with animals. Although vaccination does not remove the need for medical attention after a potential exposure, it can simplify treatment and provide valuable protection while abroad.

At Earls Barton Pharmacy, we provide professional Rabies vaccinations alongside personalised travel health advice to help you prepare for your trip with confidence. Our pharmacists will assess your destination, travel plans, and individual risk factors to determine whether vaccination is recommended and ensure you receive the most appropriate protection before you travel.

Whether you are travelling for leisure, work, volunteering, adventure travel, or extended stays abroad, our travel health team is here to help keep you protected throughout your journey.

Travel Advice for Rabies

When travelling to areas where Rabies is present, it’s important to take precautions alongside vaccination to help reduce your risk of infection.

We recommend:

  • Avoiding contact with stray dogs, monkeys, bats, and other wild animals
  • Supervising children closely around animals while travelling
  • Never feeding or approaching unfamiliar animals
  • Washing any animal bites or scratches immediately with soap and water for several minutes
  • Seeking urgent medical attention straight away after any animal bite, scratch, or lick to broken skin, even if you have been vaccinated

Rabies is found in many parts of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America, particularly in areas where contact with animals is more common.
Our pharmacy team can also provide personalised travel health advice based on your destination, planned activities, and length of stay.

The pharmacist was extremely helpful so far as advice regarding what vaccinations would be necessary or advisable for my forthcoming trip to South East Asia. He administered the vaccinations painlessly and without any problems. I'd definitely recommend.
