About the Meningitis B Vaccine

Meningitis B is a serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis Group B bacteria. It can lead to meningitis (infection of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord) and sepsis (blood poisoning). Both conditions can become life-threatening very quickly.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Severe headache
  • Vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Confusion
  • Stiff neck
  • Skin rash

At Earls Barton Pharmacy, we provide a safe and professional Meningitis B vaccination service to help protect eligible individuals against infection. Our trained pharmacists will review your medical history, age, and vaccination status to ensure the vaccine is suitable for you and provide clear advice throughout the process. The vaccine is commonly recommended for babies through the NHS programme and is also available privately for older children, university students, and adults who may be at increased risk. Our pharmacist will assess whether it is appropriate for you.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious illness and complications associated with Meningitis B. Vaccination helps reduce the risk of serious illness caused by Meningococcal Group B bacteria, including:

  • Meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord membranes)
  • Sepsis (blood poisoning)
  • Severe long-term complications
  • Life-threatening illness

Vaccination offers an effective way to help protect yourself and those around you from meningococcal disease.

Health Advice for Meningitis Prevention

Alongside vaccination, it’s important to be aware of the symptoms of meningitis and seek urgent medical attention if symptoms develop.

We recommend:

  • Practising good hand hygiene
  • Avoiding close contact with people who are unwell where possible
  • Taking extra care in crowded environments such as universities or shared accommodation
  • Seeking immediate medical advice if symptoms such as fever, stiff neck, rash, or confusion occur

Early treatment is extremely important for meningococcal infections.
