About Our Antimalarial Travel Service

If you’re travelling to a country where malaria is present, taking the right precautions is essential. Malaria is a serious infection spread by mosquito bites and is found in many parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America, the Middle East, and some Pacific islands.

At Earls Barton Pharmacy, we provide personalised travel health advice and antimalarial medication recommendations based on your destination, travel plans, and medical history. Our pharmacist will assess your level of risk and help you choose the most appropriate protection for your trip.

In addition to recommending suitable medication, we also provide practical guidance on mosquito bite prevention, including the use of insect repellents, protective clothing, and other measures to reduce your risk while travelling.

Our pharmacists will:

  • Assess the malaria risk for your destination
  • Review your travel itinerary and medical history
  • Recommend suitable antimalarial medication
  • Explain how and when to take your medication
  • Provide advice on avoiding mosquito bites

We also follow the NHS “ABCD” approach to malaria prevention:

  • Awareness of malaria risk
  • Bite prevention
  • Chemoprophylaxis (antimalarial medication)
  • Diagnosis if symptoms develop

With the right advice, medication, and preventive measures, you can significantly reduce your risk of malaria and travel with greater confidence.

Antimalarial Medications Available

The most suitable antimalarial medication depends on your destination, length of stay, medical history, and any other medicines you take. Our pharmacist will recommend the best option for your individual travel plans.

Depending on your destination and suitability, we may recommend:

Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone®)

  • Taken daily
  • Usually started 1–2 days before travel
  • Continue for 7 days after returning
  • Generally well tolerated

Doxycycline

  • Taken daily
  • Effective for many destinations
  • May increase sensitivity to sunlight
  • Continue for 4 weeks after returning

Mefloquine (Lariam®)

  • Taken weekly
  • Suitable for longer trips
  • Must be started before travel
  • Not suitable for everyone due to potential mood or sleep-related side effects

Our pharmacists will help determine the most appropriate antimalarial medication for your journey and provide advice on taking it safely and effectively. We also offer guidance on mosquito bite prevention, including the use of insect repellents, protective clothing, and mosquito nets. No antimalarial medication provides 100% protection, so it is important to combine medication with effective mosquito bite prevention measures throughout your trip.
